“I was denied roles in English movies because of my attachment to Kumawood”- Gloria Sarfo
Gloria Sarfo, a Ghanaian actress, has revealed that her role in the renowned Efiewura TV series hampered her possibilities in English-language films.
She told Nana Tuffour and Frema Adunyame on Citi TV’s Upside Down that because the show was in Twi, it was difficult for her to get roles in English-language films.
Because of the parts she portrayed in the local language television series, she claims that people looked down on her and even assumed she was uneducated.
“One thing was affecting my brand: the fact that I was doing ‘Efiewura.’ We all believe in speaking English, you know. She claims that if you do something in your own tongue, you will be ignored.
She said, “Someone told me that if I did not do English movies, I would not get the part of a rich man’s daughter.”
She went on to say that even when she got a part in a glamour film, she was always assigned uninteresting responsibilities.
Her image was never used for promotional artwork while she played lead parts.
She explained, “Sometimes I did movies and they would not even put me on the poster.”
Gloria went on to say that she had to pray to God at one time to remove any veil that had obscured her brilliance.
It was a dream come true for her to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, she added.
After many years in the film industry, her role in Shirley Frimpong Manso’s “Perfect Picture: 10 Years Later” offered her some validation.
