Daniel Toffey, a gospel singer, died while flying from Accra to Washington after visiting Ghana to attend his in- law’s burial and meet his family.
According to Graphic Online, they left Accra late Sunday night on May 22, 2022.
Onboard United 997, however, calamity struck when the young Daniel died of a pulmonary embolism in the midst of the Atlantic.
[A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot that originates in a blood artery in the lungs. It subsequently travels to a pulmonary artery, where it abruptly reduces blood flow].
Daniel Junior died, while his father Daniel Toffey Sr. stood by helplessly.
“He kept saying, ‘Daddy I can’t breathe, Daddy I can’t breathe,'” said senior Toffey in an interview with DNT.
After sitting for a bit, the victim was said to have attempted to get up to use the restroom when his movement became shaky and he began gasping for air.
“We need a doctor, we need a doctor,” screamed one young lady. Despite the flight crew’s request that everyone remain seated, the elder father felt obliged to leap from his business class seat and run to the situation.
Daniel Toffey Junior, a member of PIWC in Columbus North, died in flight despite the presence of up to seven doctors on board with tools that the doctors were “impressed” to see on United Airlines.
The flight left Kotoka International Airport at 11 p.m. on Sunday and was scheduled to arrive at Washington Dulles early the next day.
The plane was rerouted to Bermuda as a result of the tragic occurrence, and all 178 passengers remained at Grotto Bay Resort before continuing their journey to Washington.
Despite the devastating loss, the deceased father was doing well, according to Jesse Lasuer, a business class neighbor. “Even though he is holding up very well,” Lasuer recalled, “you can just see the pain in his eyes.”
Daniel Toffey Sr. had traveled to Ghana with his wife and son, a gospel singer, to attend a funeral. The father and son went to Pataskala, Ohio, a Columbus suburb, while the wife stayed behind.

One witness to the incident wrote:
“I was on the plane and saw everything fiilifili.” Hmmmm! There are many unknowns in our life. We were stranded for about fifteen hours at the Bermuda Airport before being able to board a flight to Washington Dulles Airport last night. It was a terrifying ordeal. Such a thing has never happened to me before. Terrible. Anyway, I pray for that young man’s soul.”
