Canoe capsizes on the Oti River, k!lling seven BECE candidates on their way back from the Head Teacher’s farm.
Seven students from St. Charles Liwanga Junior High School in the Northern Region’s Saboba District have been confirmed dead following a drowning incident on the Oti River.
The school’s principal has turned himself into police in connection with the accident because he is a person of interest in the case.
The 31 students were taken to the head teacher’s farm to harvest rice, and on the way back to Saboba, one of their canoes capsized on the river.
According to a member of the search party, seven bodies that were scheduled to be transported to the Yendi hospital for preservation were buried last night because the families of the deceased stated that they did not want to pursue the matter further because they believe it was an act of God.
Nonetheless, according to Saboba District Police Commander, ASP Shine Zoiku, the headteacher is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
