What happened to Connecticut K9, “Broko”? Slain Connecticut police dog receives the state’s first K-9 Medal of Valor as troopers mourn the ‘fallen hero’

Connecticut State Police posthumously awarded the first K9 Medal of Valor to their fallen hero, Broko, during a memorial ceremony on Tuesday. Broko, a police dog, lost his life while attempting to apprehend a suspect during a warrant service operation.

Broko, a Connecticut State Police dog, was recognized for his bravery and selflessness on December 21. During an attempt to serve a warrant to Vaughn R. Malloy, a suspect involved in a 2022 shooting, Broko played a pivotal role in protecting the lives of state troopers and other law enforcement officers. The situation escalated, leading to police fatally shooting Malloy.

“Broko was more than just a pet. Broko was a hero,” expressed Ronnell Higgins, commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. The K9 Medal of Valor is a testament to Broko’s dedication and loyalty, reflecting his role in safeguarding officers throughout his career.

Handler’s Tribute

Trooper First Class Gregory Fascendini, Broko’s handler since 2020, paid tribute to his loyal canine partner. Fascendini praised Broko’s dedication and efficiency, highlighting moments when he considered himself merely Broko’s “chauffeur” due to the K9’s exceptional skills.
