“We will not accept bribes to vote you for you”- Cape Coast Assembly members return bribe to the major nominee
monies reportedly paid to assembly members by Cape Coast Mayor Ernest Arthur, who was rejected, have been returned.
The delegates added that they are not in the Metropolitan Assembly to receive bribes in exchange for confirming the mayor because doing so would be a violation of federal law.
Some people, notably the Oguaa Traditional Council, believe that they are being targeted for receiving money while voting against the Mayor.
They have indicated that they intend to maintain the integrity of the Cape Coast Metropolis.
‘The money was returned for future reference,’ said Usman Abban, a member of the group’s leadership team, who added that it was done to avoid election violence and insecurity in the region.
In his statement, he indicated that Arthur’s behavior toward the inhabitants of Cape Coast Metropolis was not in accordance with their wishes.
The nomination has been rejected by the members of the assembly for the second time in succession.
Justina Marigold Assan, Central Regional Minister, got on her knees on Wednesday, with a heavy heart and tears in her eyes, to beg and appeal to assembly members of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Area to accept Mayor-nominee, Ernest Arthur, as their mayor.
Mr Arthur served during the administration of President Akufo-Addo and was subsequently re-elected to a second term.
Many of the development projects that have taken place in the area have received accolades, and Madam Assan believes that his confirmation will be a positive move in the right direction.
The nominee needs 44 ‘Yes’ votes to secure a two-thirds majority.
However, it appears that the acts of the regional minister were insufficiently convincing to the assembly members, as they voted against him.
It took several hours until he earned enough votes to be qualified. He received 40 “yes” votes and 25 “no” votes out of a total of 65 votes cast, which was not enough to qualify.
The Assembly, on the other hand, will vote again because Ernest Arthur has been re-nominated by the President of the Ghana.
