Watch video of how Majority and Minority exchanged blows in Parliament over mobile money tax
Brawls erupted between members of Ghana’s Parliament on Monday night, just before a final vote on a contentious electronic transfer levy bill known as e-levy was scheduled to take place in Parliament.
The Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, announced that a division would be held and that he would vote as a Member of Parliament in favor of the bill, which had been submitted under a certificate of urgency.
As the night wore on, several NDC members grew agitated, questioning his choice to vote after presiding over proceedings all night.
They pushed their way to the dais’s front row, threatening the Bekwai Member of Parliament. This provoked anger among Majority MPs, and a brawl erupted when Mr. Osei-Owusu over the presiding role to the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.
