Mother jailed after going to birthday party leaving her hungry daughter to die.
A young mother who left her child hungry as she went out to celebrate her 18th birthday has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Verphy Kudi left Asiah, a 20-month old baby, in her Brighton apartment for almost six days as she partied in London and Coventry.
On December 5, she left her apartment to celebrate her birthday with her lover in London.
On December 9, she traveled to another party in Coventry before returning to London on December 11.
Prosecutors claim Asiah died of influenza and hunger after being left alone in the apartment.
On December 11, 2019, Kudi came home to find her daughter dead on the floor. frightened and upset, she phoned 911.
Asiah was taken to Brighton’s Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital at 6.12pm on December 11, but couldn’t be rescued and was pronounced dead on arrival.
Verphy Kudi admitted manslaughter and was sentenced on August 6.
“Asiah was alone in that apartment for six days, unable to bring attention to her plight,” said Judge Christine Laing QC.
“She was a vulnerable kid who totally depended on you as her mother.
For you to be able to enjoy your birthday and the birthdays of your friends as a carefree teenager, the kid suffered great pain in her last days. “
Judge Laing added: “It goes without saying that this is a sad case that will undoubtedly arouse strong emotions in everyone who hears about it.”
