“Ghana Qualified for the world cup by mistake”- Nigeria Coach Jose Poseiro
Jose Poseiro, head coach of Nigeria’s national team, claimed that Ghana’s World Cup qualification in Qatar in 2022 was a mistake.
The Super Eagles have more players with established careers in the top European divisions, in the opinion of the Portuguese coach, than the Black Stars.
Ghana and Nigeria played to a 1-1 tie in a tight match in March at the Mashood Abiola Stadium, which was sufficient for Ghana to advance to the World Cup.
Thomas Partey’s first-half goal in Abuja gave both teams a chance to win three points, but Super Eagles captain William Troost-penalty Ekong’s kick negated it.
At the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, the first leg of the match ended in a scoreless tie. The result of the game guaranteed that the Black Stars would qualify on the basis of away goals.
When the Super Eagles were disqualified from the World Cup qualification process, Augustine Eguavoen, the manager of the Nigerian national team, was fired.
Poseiro, who took over as Nigeria’s head coach after Eguavoen was dismissed, believes Ghana qualified for the World Cup inadvertently.
He continued, “Unfortunately, my group, which includes players who compete in England, Italy, France, and Spain, did not defeat Ghana to advance to the World Cup. “I have players who compete in Spain, France, Italy, and England.”
However, I think it was just a mistake, and I think Nigeria is better than Ghana.” he added
The Black Stars will play South Korea, Uruguay, and Portugal in Group F of the World Cup.
