On Sunday, photographs of Ghanaian Teachers modeling in what appeared to be professionally fitted uniforms went viral, sending social media into a frenzy.
The new uniforms are said to be a policy of the Ghana Education Service (GES) aimed at modernizing the teaching profession.
The unproven reports have enraged many Ghanaians, who have chastised the Service for what they see as a pointless attempt in light of the school sector’s problems.
However, Sylvia Yeboah, one of the Teachers in the viral images, has emphasized that the uniforms were sew by them and not by GES, as previously reported.
She wrote on Facebook:
“Please the news about the uniform is fake news and anyone who comes across it should disregard it the uniform was a self-initiative by us and not by GES. Thank you”
Sylvia told Asaase Radio on Monday that the program was inspired by four female teachers at the Akwasease Methodist Primary School in Tepa who wanted to encourage their students to pursue careers as teachers in the future.
She revealed that the campaign began more than a year ago, and that the images in circulation were taken in September 2021.
The photographs have gotten a lot of backlash on social media, indicating that a lot of people don’t agree with the concept. There are various difficulties ailing Ghanaian teachers that, in the opinion of many, should be given priority above uniforms.
