Captain Smart is facing extortion charges after allegedly demanding GHS100,000 from a businessman.
Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, a vociferous Ghanaian journalist, has been in new difficulties with the State after being accused of extortion.
According to Citi News, Captain Smart was charged with two charges of extortion with the use of a threat by the Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday.
One Eric Daniels Dadzie Copperfield aka Gh Boy, who is accused of facilitating Captain Smart’s alleged extortion, is also charged with aiding and abetting a crime.
The complainant, Ahmed Kwabena Nkrumah, a businessman based in Tema, claimed Captain Smart sought GHS100,000 from him to disregard a narrative about dirty operations at the port.
Although Captain Smart was apparently paid $10,000 at first, he claimed it was insufficient to appease the “elders” and demanded the remainder of the money.
He was apprehended, however, while GHS 50,000 was being paid to him on the premises.
Captain Smart and Gh Boy both pleaded not guilty to the accusations, and His Honour, K.K. Obiri-Yeboah granted them GHS 50,000 bail each.
They must also provide two sureties, both of whom must be family.
The lawsuit has been postponed until March 3, 2022.
