Louisa’s tweet has spurred numerous discussions on social media since then.
The reaction of a vulnerable host to specific mixed infections caused by periodontopathic bacteria produces the common inflammatory disorders of gingivitis and periodontitis, which are referred to jointly as chronic periodontal disease (CPD).
Clinically, CPD can influence the onset or progression of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, impaired recognition function, and obesity, in addition to causing swollen gums, receding gums, tooth hypersensitivity, tooth mobility, impaired mastication, and ultimately tooth loss.
