In the ongoing exams, 6 teachers were caught solving questions or giving out answers to candidates in BECE 2023.
Six teachers have been arrested by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) for aiding candidates in the ongoing 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to cheat. The teachers were caught red-handed engaging in various forms of exam malpractice at different examination centers.
Among the teachers apprehended is Flora Ashietey, who was allegedly found in possession of a tablet containing the questions and answers of the exam at the Trinity Lutheran School in Tema. Another teacher, Albert Adu-Gyan, was caught capturing images of the Religious and Moral Education questions he had already answered at the Oxford School Complex in Dunkwa-On-Offin. Kwarteng Asiedu Derick, an invigilator at the Ashanti Nkoranza D/A JSS, was allegedly discovered with captured photos of the Integrated Science Paper 2, which he had shared on a WhatsApp group called “Amabame Teachers Page” with 21 participants.
Furthermore, three teachers from the Kwabenafori Exams Centre at Obuasi are currently in police custody after a video of their misconduct circulated on August 7, 2023. The video prompted their immediate arrest. WAEC officials expressed their satisfaction with the arrests, emphasizing the importance of independent work for students. John Kapi, an official of WAEC, lamented the fact that teachers were involved in exam malpractice, as they were expected to be partners of the Ghana Education Service in combating such acts.
In addition to these arrests, WAEC revealed that four other individuals were apprehended for suspicious activities at examination centers in the Ashanti Region, Greater Accra Region, and the Central Region. These individuals were also suspected of engaging in exam malpractices.
WAEC has assured the public that it has implemented stricter measures to counter cheating during the exams it administers. The recent arrests serve as a reminder that exam malpractice will not be tolerated, and that integrity and honesty are essential qualities for both teachers and students alike.
