David Jacques Hernandez of Lancaster passed away at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as a homicide. The Los Angeles Times, citing anonymous sources, mentioned that the child was found in a bathtub with his throat slit. The body was discovered by a family friend who visited the residence at the request of one of the boy’s relatives.

In addition to the deceased child, deputies also found Rena Naulls, 39, at the scene experiencing a “medical emergency.” Naulls, the live-in partner of the child’s mother, attempted “to take his own life” at the residence, according to sheriff’s officials.

Naulls was transported to a hospital and is currently in stable condition, as per the sheriff’s department.

“Mr. Naulls has been identified as a person of interest in this case,” stated sheriff’s officials in a release. They emphasized that no arrests have been made.

The toddler’s biological father, Herbett Hernandez, expressed profound sorrow over his son’s passing and is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

“What could my baby have done to deserve this from that psycho, monster, whoever did it?” lamented the elder Hernandez.

The grieving father had an intermittent relationship with the boy’s mother for the past 13 years, with the couple being separated for the last four months.

According to the sheriff’s department, three other children were present in the household. They were unharmed and have been placed under the care of the County Department of Children and Family Services.
