“There is no sense in putting expensive duty on cars and later auctioning them for cheap”- Kumchacha

Founder and Leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Nicholas Osei, also known as ‘Prophet Kumchacha’, has expressed his concerns over the high import duties imposed on cars in Ghana. Speaking in an interview on Cape Coast-based Property FM, Prophet Kumchacha criticized the practice of auctioning imported cars at significantly lower prices after imposing hefty import duties on them.

He described this act as senseless and inhumane, highlighting the plight of Ghanaians who work hard abroad for many years and use their earnings to ship cars back to Ghana. According to him, the import duty alone on each car amounts to approximately GH¢100,000, which many individuals are unable to pay. As a result, the government seizes their cars and auctions them at prices far below the import duty imposed.

Prophet Kumchacha expressed his frustration at this unfair treatment, emphasizing the irony of the situation where the same car that someone struggled to import is sold at a much cheaper price than the import duty. His remarks shed light on the challenges faced by Ghanaians in bringing their vehicles back home and called for a review of the import duty policy to alleviate the burden on citizens.
