“The money from doing gospel is too small so I run to the world” – Popular singer, Simi reveals why she left gospel music
Simi, a renowned Nigerian songstress, has recently revealed the reason behind her decision to leave the gospel music scene in Nigeria.
In an interview on MTV Base Africa’s show, Official Naija Top 10, she disclosed that the main factor was the meagre payment she received as a performance fee.
Simi expressed her disappointment, stating that the highest amount she ever received was a mere N70,000.
However, at that time, it felt like a significant sum to her. She even mentioned that she diligently paid a 10 percent tithe from the money.
“I actually used to go to a lot of churches to perform. They will pay me like N5k, N10k. Do you know the highest amount of money I actually collected when I was doing gospel [music]? N70,000. And I felt like I had arrived. I still paid a 10 per cent tithe from the money”
Simi further explained that financial constraints, including the inability to afford studio sessions, music production, and promotion, ultimately led her to switch to secular music.
