Controversial Ghanaian media critic, Sally Mann, has recently caused a stir with her remarks about married women during a television interview on Joy TV. Mann boldly alleged that a significant number of first children born to married women actually belong to other men. Expressing her concern over the alarming rate of infidelity in marriages, Mann called for immediate action to put an end to this trend. To support her argument, she cited the infamous case of former footballer Odartey Lamptey.
In 1994, Gloria Lamptey and Nii Odartey Lamptey tied the knot under Ghana’s Marriage Ordinance. However, in 2013, Gloria filed a petition with the High Court seeking the annulment of their marriage. She claimed that Mr. Lamptey’s violent behavior had irreparably damaged their relationship, causing emotional and psychological abuse towards her and their children. Furthermore, she accused him of engaging in extramarital affairs.
In June 2017, the High Court ruled that the marriage had indeed broken down beyond repair. The court also determined that the three children of the marriage did not belong to Mr. Lamptey. As a result, Gloria received a financial settlement of ¢200,000, a house in Dome, and two vehicles. The marital home, which has recently garnered media attention, was awarded to Mr. Lamptey.
It was based on this case that Sally Mann advised married women to refrain from cheating on their husbands. Her remarks have ignited controversy, with some supporting her call for faithfulness in marriages, while others criticize her for making sweeping generalizations. The topic of infidelity in marriages remains a sensitive issue, and it is clear that Mann’s remarks have touched a nerve within Ghanaian society.
