A young nurse named Paul Dodzi has reportedly taken his own life due to unpaid allowances owed to him by the government.
Paul was a rotational nurse in his early twenties who worked at the Church of God Hospital in Esieninpong in the Ejisu Municipality.
Paul was found hanging in an uncompleted building at Asankragua in the Asanti Akim Municipality after his work colleagues noticed he had been absent from work. They later found out that he had taken his own life.
Paul had been complaining about his service allowance, which had not been paid for several months. He was struggling to take care of himself and sometimes had to depend on others to survive. His colleague questioned why the government was ignoring the needs of nurses and patients alike.
Rotational nurses like Paul have not received their salaries for the past 11 months, and the government has not given any indication of when they will be paid.
It is important for the government to prioritize the needs of healthcare workers and ensure that they are paid on time. This will not only prevent tragedies like Paul’s suicide but also ensure that patients receive the care they need.
