Popular Ghanaian Transgender, Angel Maxine Shares Her Secondary School Experience – Watch Video
Angel Maxine, Ghana’s only open transgender musician, recently shared her experience of being placed in the girl’s dormitory when she first went to secondary school. Despite having male organs, her feminine features led people to assume she was a girl.
Maxine recounted her first experience in secondary school on the If More Let’s Divide Podcast. She explained that she had to draw the housemistress’s attention to her original gender and was subsequently stripped to confirm it.
This experience highlights the challenges that transgender individuals face in society.
“When I went to secondary school, I was taken to the girls’ dormitory because they couldn’t tell my gender and my name was my name still. When I went to school at first, I was wearing jeans and a shirt and there were other girls who had also come new and were wearing the same jeans and skirt. They just put me together with them. It was just my voice and my looks so they didn’t think twice. So, when I went to the dormitory and saw all the girls, I said what would I do, so I went to the housemistress and told her I was a male. They had to strip me naked just to be sure,” she narrated.
Angel Maxine has used her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana. Her song “Wo Fie” featuring Sister Derby has become an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana. However, LGBTQ+ is frowned upon in Ghana, and there have been discussions surrounding an Anti-LGBTQ+ bill that has been presented to parliament waiting to be passed. The proposed bill includes criminalizing LGBT advocacy, requirements to denounce “suspects,” advocates for conversion therapy, and imposes longer jail sentences.
Overall, Angel Maxine’s story sheds light on the challenges that transgender individuals face in society. It is important to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and to create a more accepting and inclusive society for all individuals.
