Man pours acid on his ex-girlfriend and her new lover
Onyekachi Agu, a carpenter who was 32 years old at the time of the crime, received a seven-year prison sentence for pouring acid on his ex-girlfriend Aishat Adefarati and her new boyfriend Monsuru Ahmed.
The motive for the crime was reportedly Agu’s inability to cope with his lover leaving him for another man due to financial difficulties.
Witnesses claim that Agu followed the couple out of a restaurant, threw acid on them and fled the scene.
Justice Oyindamola Ogala required that the prosecution prove that Agu had committed severe harm, and accused him of attempting to avoid punishment by retracting his confession and failing to produce his brother in court.
“The defendant tried to mislead the court by claiming to have been with his brother on the said day but he failed to corroborate his evidence by giving the date and day he visited him,” the judge said.
“His ‘brother’ who he tried to use as an alibi, was nowhere to be found to give evidence before this court. Pouring a corrosive substance on the victims was never contradicted by the defendant. The action of the defendant was considered an intention,”
