“I used my own money to pay for flight tickets and winning bonuses” – Stephen Appiah Reveals Sacrifices He Made for Black stars
Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has revealed how he used to pay for travel tickets for his colleagues when the national team was unappealing to players.
When he was named captain, the former Juventus CF player said that he even used his own money to pay for his international colleagues’ victory bonuses.
Appiah expressed his discontent with the current state of football in the nation.
The former Fenerbache player believes his efforts have not been sufficiently recognized and expressed optimism that things would change soon.
“Unfortunately, some of us are overly modest, but once you recognize your worth, you become selective about your actions and associations. Despite our previous efforts, we still want to lend a hand,” stated Appiah in an interview with Sompa TV.
“There was a time everybody (players) had no interest in playing for Black Stars. There was a time I had to pay for players’ plane tickets to Ghana and there was a time I paid winning bonuses.
“So today if I see how things are been done, I ask myself why did I waste my money? But we hope that one day it will be well.”
The 42-year-old also remarked that he hopes to see an ex-footballer oversee the administration of the sport in the nation as the president of the Ghana Football Association one day.
