Julie Mutesasira, a Ugandan gospel singer and mother of East Africa’s Got Talent winners Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira, has revealed why she moved from Uganda to Canada.
The mother of three revealed to Canada’s Got Talent that she left Uganda for her safety after coming out as a gay woman, noting that her motherland is not welcoming to her kind.
She went on to say that she was married to a pastor at the time, which is illegal in Uganda.
“I decided to leave Uganda because I came out because of my sexuality. Being a gay woman in Uganda and married to a pastor that’s an abomination.
“So I decided to relocate to Canada to make a new life for my babies,” Mutesasira says.
Julie Mutesasira is a gospel singer who was married to pastor Steven Mutesasira until their marriage fell apart in 2016, resulting in their divorce.
She moved to Canada in 2017, leaving her three children behind, but the three of them reunited in 2020. She is married to her female lover and currently resides in Canada.
At a time when her children were auditioning for Canada’s Got Talent, the mother of three opened up about her sexuality.
The teens also discussed their mother’s journey from Uganda to Canada prior to their performance at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort’s Avalon Theatre.
“That was sad, being there without my mom for five years has been some of the hardest moments of my life,” Ezikiel said with emotion.
Esther added; “We were born in Uganda, Kampala, my mum left Uganda when I was 11-years old and my brother was 7 and we were separated for five years. Our mom has been our music teacher and she has really helped us through the phone for the past five years. A year ago we united with our mom and we were so happy, we found a home, were mom is it’s a home”.
