“I have a master degree but my pay is not up to Ghs 3000, I will leave Ghana to be a cleaner abroad”- SHS teacher cries
Sarah Yeboah Mensah, a government teacher with a Master’s Degree who teaches biological and pure science at the secondary school level, has stated that if she finds a new job as a cleaner, she will gladly accept it and stop teaching.
The reasons given by Sarah Yeboah are that the Ghanaian government pays little or no attention to the well-being of teachers in the country.
Speaking with several of her coworkers on Onua TV, she mentioned that despite having a master’s degree, her pay does not exceed 3,000.
“If I have the chance to work as a cleaner somewhere and the pay is decent, I’ll quit teaching and do that.” “I have a Master’s degree and teach Biology and Integrated Science at the high school, and my take-home pay is less than Ghs3000,” she explained to Captain Smart.
She went on to say that the situation for teachers is so awful that some of their colleagues had to go hungry during the school day and rely on others for transportation to get home after school.
Speaking further on Ghana’s education and teacher issues, another teacher, who also teaches Mathematics at the SHS, stated that the politicization of the educational system is taking a toll on teachers, causing them to suffer in the line of duty.
“Nothing is going good. They’ve politicized our education, and we, the instructors, are bearing the brunt of the consequences. I haven’t had a vacation in two years because I teach both green and gold tracks without any extra duty pay. “I’ll never let any of my children to teach because my lifestyle doesn’t even encourage it,” she stated.
Another kindergarten teacher revealed that at a career day with her students, “none of my KG pupils said he/she will be a teacher when I asked them [their future career].” They claim the president stated that a teacher cannot be wealthy, hence they would not become teachers.”
