Harnaam Kaur, a woman famous for her thick beard, has expressed her delight in her appearance.
During International Women’s Day, the 31-year-old social media sensation encouraged women to defy traditional beauty standards.
Kaur, who has received taunts of abuse for her appearance, said she has learned to embrace herself and be comfortable in her own flesh.
“I am happy living as a young, beautiful, bearded woman. I have realised that this body is mine, I own it, I do not have any other body to live in, and so I may as well love it unconditionally,” she told my london.
Kaur, on the other hand, said she would not advise other women with facial hair to keep it because of the difficulties she faced.
“I will never tell someone to go out and keep your facial hair. I’ve been strong enough to go out and handle it. Other people might not be,” she said.
The woman also revealed that she never thought she’d live to be 16, because she had suicidal thoughts.
Kaur’s life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) at the age of 12. PCOS manifests itself in a variety of ways, including weight gain, hair growth, and mental difficulties.
Her mother would take her to have her beard waxed to avoid being recognized by her classmates, but the more she waxed, the thicker and faster the facial hair grew.
Kaur claimed that she stood out from the other females in her class and that she was teased by classmates because of it.
However, it was when she became 16 that she chose to embrace her beard and let it grow in order to defy cultural notions of what a woman should look like.
Kaur is now a well-known motivational speaker and activist who has graced the covers of Vogue Japan and a number of other publications.
