‘how will you feel if i lock you up for 3 days’ – IGP Blasts Police Officers for Keeping People in Cells (video)
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, has directed officers not to retain a lot of individuals in a single police cell.
He described the practice as outdated during a tour of several police cells with his guys.
He continued by stating that the practice is not in the best interests of anybody because the cells are not adequate to accommodate a significant number of suspects.
“You can’t fit 25 people in there.” What we mean is that regardless of who is involved, whether he is a suspect, criminal, or whatever, that person’s humanity is comparable to ours, and we cannot deny that person’s dignity.
“We have to be very humanistic because it could happen to any of us,” he said, adding that “we need to push the agenda of this cell over-population is eradicated.”
Additionally, the IGP advised the police personnel he employed to be brutally candid about the issues they faced.
A strong security service, according to him, is built by first detecting issues and then doing something about them.
“We did not come to discuss a problem with you. We’ve identified a systemic problem and want to address it. So be honest with us and put an end to this old mentality policy of defending it. “It’s not going to help anyone,” he said emphatically.
