In an attempt to stop a column of Russian tanks from approaching, a Ukrainian soldier blew himself up to demolish a bridge.
Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych, a Marine battalion engineer, was recognized as a hero by the Ukrainian military for laying down his life for the country.
Volodymyrovych was positioned at the Henichesk bridge, a crucial site linking Crimea and mainland Ukraine, when a column of Russian tanks advanced, according to the Ukrainian military’s Facebook page.
According to the post, “On this difficult day for our country, when the Ukrainian people gave way to the Russian occupiers in all directions, one of the hardest places on the map of Ukraine was the Crimean intersection, where one of the first enemies met a separate marine battalion.”
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Volodymyrovych offered to place mines on the bridge when it was determined that the only option to stop the armored column was to blow up the bridge.

The soldier opted to make the ultimate sacrifice on the bridge when he realized he didn’t have time to get cover.
The military claimed in a statement that “the bridge was mined, but he didn’t manage to get away from there.”
According to his comrades, Volodymyrovych’s “heroic gesture” considerably halted Russian soldiers’ approach, allowing the unit to reorganize and organize defense, according to the Independent.
Military officials stated that Volodymyrovych will receive a posthumous award for his “heroic effort.”
