“God give me the strength to overcome this pain”- Christian Atsu’s twin sister cries at his funeral
Christiana Atsupie Twasam, the twin sister of former Black Stars player Christian Atsu Twasam, has bemoaned the loss of ‘her twin brother’ and asked for God’s strength to go on in life.
Christian Atsu was discovered dead in debris 12 days after the terrible earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6.
The 31-year-old was a winger for Turkey’s Hatayspor FC when the calamity struck, only a day after he scored his first goal for the club.
The tragedy shattered Ghanaians’ and the football community’s hearts, and they have since glorified him with tributes praising his wonderful personality and compassion.
Atsupie Twasam paid homage to him during a State memorial ceremony in Accra on Friday, saying, “Atsu, my heartbeat, the love of my life, my spouse, my universe, my role model!”
“After hearing about the earthquake, I traveled to Turkey with the intention of returning to the UK with you alive, but the Holy Book teaches that our ideas, methods, and intentions are not of God.
“You had a mother’s heart, Atsu, and when you did say ‘Atsupie it is okay, just overlook it, it’s nothing,’ it was comforting. Atsu, you left me in the middle of the ocean, as we are not done with our plans and the love we shared.
Atsu, I pray that you and the Almighty God grant me the strength to overcome this pain and permanent scar, and to continue with your good deeds. Atsu, I love you beyond everything, but the Almighty God loves you more. Rest in perfect peace, love, till we meet again.”
Christian Atsu’s state funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners, headed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Atsu played for teams like as Everton, Chelsea, and Newcastle, and he earned 65 caps for Ghana’s Black Stars, scoring 10 goals and assisting nine others.
His senior national team highlight was winning Best Player and Best Goal in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. He assisted Ghana in reaching the tournament’s final stage.
His spouse, Marie Claire Rupio, and three children survive him.
