The Ghana Education Service’s Controversial Directive for BECE Exams

In a memo dated 18th July 2023 that has gone viral on social media, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has faced severe backlash for its directive to supervisors and invigilators of this year’s BECE exams in the Waija-Gbawe Municipality. The controversial instruction, outlined in point 4 of the communique, authorizes a thorough search of candidates, including their private parts, before they are allowed to enter the examination hall.

The directive has sparked outrage and widespread criticism among the public. Many view this invasive search as an infringement on the candidates’ privacy and dignity. They argue that such measures are unnecessary and disproportionate to the objective of ensuring fair and transparent exams. Social media platforms have been flooded with posts condemning the GES and questioning the logic behind this directive.

On the other hand, the GES has justified its directive by stating that it is part of its efforts to guarantee a level playing field for all candidates. The education body claims that these stringent measures aim to prevent any form of cheating or misconduct during the exams. However, critics argue that there are alternative methods to achieve this goal without resorting to such extreme measures that violate the rights and dignity of the candidates.

The directive, although part of a broader set of instructions, has overshadowed other measures outlined in the memo. The GES’s intention to ensure free, fair, and transparent conduct of the 2023 B.E.C.E. seems to have been eclipsed by the controversy surrounding this specific directive.
