Chief Justice finally explains why popular lẽsbiᾶn Ama Governor cannot be called to the Bar – Watch Video

The Chief Justice of Ghana has come forward to defend the decision made by the General Legal Council (GLC) regarding the suspension of Elorm Ama Governor-Ababio’s call to the Ghana Bar.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has stated that the alleged conduct of the law student is not suitable for the legal sector, which is why the council decided to prevent her from being called to the bar.

Speaking at an event in Accra on July 31, the Chief Justice expressed surprise at the public outcry over the GLC’s decision and emphasized the importance of exceptional moral character as a prerequisite for receiving a call to the bar.

“When somebody has behaved in a certain way and we say we cannot call the person to the bar, I was surprised at the furore that rose up concerning the call to the bar of certain people and I thought, like seriously?

“This is proper conduct for the legal sector? That is interesting. So, for you to come into the space of the legal sector, your conduct cannot be obscene and offensive and you expect to be admitted, it doesn’t work like that. Your comments on social media, your ex parte communication for judge is extremely critical,” she cautioned.

In November 2022, Elorm Ama Governor-Ababio, a popular social media influencer, saw her dream of becoming a lawyer shattered after six years of studying for her LLM. While her colleagues were admitted to the profession, she was left out.

Speculations arose that this move could be an attempt to curtail her activities due to her identification as and support for LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana, as well as her numerous piercings. Despite fulfilling all academic requirements, her call to the Bar was withheld due to a petition filed by a “concerned citizen” who alleged that she lacked good character and had breached the Code of Conduct for the Students of the Ghana School of Law.

The petitioner, Hajia Siduri, argued that Ama’s YouTube videos had damaged the school’s reputation and therefore she should not be allowed to practice law.
