“Afcon trophy is bigger than the champions league”- Sadio Mane
Sadio Mane went from villain to hero after missing a fifth-minute penalty and scoring the game-winning penalty shootout as Senegal defeated Egypt to win the Africa Cup of Nations.
The AFCON championship was added to the Liverpool star’s trophy cabinet, which already included the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
However, after being named player of the tournament, an ecstatic Mane acknowledged that winning the Africa Cup of Nations trophy is the most important achievement of his career.
“It’s not just the most significant trophy in my life, but it’s the most important day of my life, the best day of my life, and by far the best trophy in my life,” Sadio Mane told reporters.
“I really can’t articulate how I feel, and I’m incredibly happy with what we’ve accomplished,” he continued. Sadio Mane had missed a penalty just five minutes in, yet he chose himself as the winner in the shootouts.
“I wasn’t happy when I missed the penalty, but my teammates made a significant difference tonight,” added the forward. “After Sadio missed the penalty, everyone in the locker room said to me, ‘We don’t care what happened.'” “We lose and we triumph together,” he continued.
Senegal has won the World Cup for the first time after losing twice before yesterday night’s finals.
