Professor Cyril Osim Ndifon, a renowned legal scholar and Professor of Law at the University of Calabar, has found himself at the center of controversy once again. Despite a history of allegations and legal battles, Ndifon has recently been reinstated as a professor by the University, sparking outrage and protests among students and faculty.
Ndifon’s troubled past dates back to August 29th, 2015, when the first report of him sexually assaulting a student in his office came to light. This shocking revelation shook the University community and tarnished Ndifon’s reputation. However, despite the grave nature of the accusation, no concrete action was taken against him at the time.
In a further display of audacity, on March 2nd, 2017, Ndifon attempted to impede an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) into allegations of abuse of office. He took his case to the Federal High Court in Calabar, but his efforts were in vain as the court dismissed his plea.
Fast forward to February 2021, and the University, under the leadership of Florence Obi, controversially reinstated Ndifon as a professor. This decision caused an uproar among students and faculty who were dismayed by the University’s apparent disregard for the seriousness of the allegations against Ndifon.
Now, on August 14th, 2023, Ndifon once again finds himself in the midst of scandal. As the Dean of the Faculty of Law, he is facing renewed accusations of sexual harassment and various instances of sexual misconduct, including a fresh allegation of rape involving a female law student. These distressing allegations have sparked protests on campus, with students demanding justice and an end to the culture of harassment that has plagued the institution.
The situation surrounding Professor Cyril Ndifon is an ongoing and deeply troubling issue that highlights the need for transparency, accountability, and a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct in academic institutions. The University of Calabar must address these allegations swiftly and effectively, ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and restoring faith in its commitment to justice.
