“Prostitution and galamsey should be allowed if Rasta are accepted in schools”- Methodist Bishop

Former Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese has expressed his disapproval with the High Court’s decision to accept two Rastafarian students, Tyrone Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea, to Achimota School.

The presiding judge’s decision in the case, according to Stephen Bosomtwe, was “unfortunate” and should be overturned.

He argued that the decision established a negative precedent, comparing it to legalizing galamsey and prostitution.

In an interview with Rainbow Radio, Bishop Bosomtwe declared, “If that was the ruling, then galamsey operators should operate.” Is not it true that they do not have the legal authority? The right to eat is a basic human right. He enquired, “What is the fundamental right of traders selling on our roads?”

“Is it not their right to eat if the government tells them to stop?” he continued. Excuse me, but can we also say that eating is a fundamental right of prostitutes and that they should be allowed to work? So why do not we let them prostitute in order for them to eat? The court’s decision has disappointed me. The judge must overturn her decision. It is impolite and should be discouraged. She needs to go back and make her decision.”

Meanwhile, the Achimota’s Board of Governors has stated its intention to challenge the High Court’s judgment.

The school board announced in a statement released on June 1, 2021 that they had instructed the school’s lawyers to appeal the court’s verdict since they disagree with it.

After Tyrone Iras Marhguy and Oheneba Kwaku Nkraba passed their basic school examinations and were placed in the school by the Ghana Education Service, the Achimota School refused them admittance due to their hairstyles.

The two-parent family then sued the school for discrimination and requested that the court order the school to allow them, citing religion and belief as the reason for their dreadlocks.

The Human Rights Division of the High Court, presided over by Justice Gifty Agyei, ordered Achimota School to admit the two students on Monday, May 31, 2021.

Justice Gifty Agyei Addo In her judgment stated that the two students’ fundamental human rights cannot be curtailed by the rules of Achimota School.
