“You Can’t Play For Black Stars If Your Father Is Not Rich” – Tony Yeboah Exposes GFA
Former Ghana international Anthony Yeboah widely known as Tony Yeboah has slammed the country’s player selection process.
Reports of GFA officials manipulating national team call-ups for personal gain have long been a popular urban legend in Ghana.
Following Ghana’s withdrawal from the group stages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, claims of national team selection influence increased, but Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, has stated that no one influenced the call-ups.
Tony Yeboah has added his voice to the debate, claiming that the national team’s structures primarily benefit privileged kids who can afford to pay their way up.
He claims that the national team is now for sale to the highest bidder, making it impossible for players who truly deserve to be called up.
“You cannot play for the national team if your parent is not wealthy,” Anthony Yeboah told a press conference at the Yegola Hotel in Kumasi. “However, we do not use this attitude to help football grow.”
“How can we expect our football to grow if they have to pay to be recognized?” “The problem is that all of the talented players have been denied entry to national teams and are thus unable to participate,” he added.
