Obaapa Christy, a gospel musician, is praising God for how far she has come in her life.
From being a young girl who had to share a single room with her parents and eight siblings to becoming one of Ghana’s celebrated musicians who has touched people’s lives through her music.
Obaapa revealed in an interview with Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe on GhanaWeb’s ‘Mahyease’ that she came from a poor family but rose to a higher status through hard work.
She relived her days in their family home, recounting the hardships she had to face.
“My mother gave birth to us all in the same room.” We lived in my uncle’s house in Kumasi, which was a family home. The house had a large number of occupants.
“We took turns cleaning the bathhouse and sweeping the grounds.” We were all nine of us in a single room, separated by a curtain… and we all urinated in a chamber pot at night.
“It was difficult to figure out who among my siblings wept in bed at night,” she laughed.
Christy moved in with her aunt at one point in her life, where she helped sell ‘pure water’ and ice kenkey.
The award-winning singer has described herself as a strong woman who isn’t afraid to get the job done.
Obaa Christy believes that her impactful songs have helped shape and give hope to thousands of listeners in her over two decades in the gospel ministry.
“I’ve been in the music business for 20 years.” It all started in 2002… just look at your foundation. My first single, ‘Me Tease,’ was what got me started and kept me going.
People appreciate the fact that I changed and sustained the industry thru God’s grace. In 2002, I met Florence Obinim and my seniors, the Daughters of Glorious Jesus and the Tagoe Sisters, and I admire them. “When I see them, I bow to accept their grace,” she added.
