Video: I was a troto mate and sold pure water – Abeiku Ainooson shares from grass to grace story
Abeiku Ainooson, a former Kotoko defender, has told his grace to glory tale of how football transformed his life after he was forced to sell pure water to survive.
Due to great poverty, the Takoradi-born athlete had to scratch out a livelihood by selling pure water at the city’s Central Market.
Ainooson stated that he was homeless and lived in a run-down kiosk owned by his ex-girlfriend. The rounds of difficulty caused him to consider leaving the sport.
Fortunately, destiny smiled on him and gave him the opportunity to alter his fortunes when the late coach EK Afranie chose him to play for a Black Satellite call-up, and things quickly began to improve.
Ainooson recounts joining Inter Allies following the competition before transferring to Adubease, where his talent was recognized nationally.
Throughout his time as an Edubease captain, he worked as a minibus conductor, also known as a ‘trotro’ mate, and recounted an encounter with a police officer that caused him and the driver to lose their daily sales.
