USA Veep, Kamala Harris visits ‘slave castle’ in Ghana where kidnapped Africans were held before being shipped to America – Photos
Vice President Kamala Harris toured the cells and the dark walls of a colonial-era coastal fort on Tuesday, where millions of enslaved Africans were kept prisoner before being put onto ships headed for the Americas.
Harris was pressing on recalling the traumatic past even as she stood earlier Tuesday before a memorial honoring Ghana’s freedom, imagining a great future between the United States and Africa driven by African ingenuity.
“The horror of what happened here must always be remembered,” she said from the fort as the sun set over the water. “It cannot be denied. It must be taught. History must be learned.”
Harris’ remarks come as many conservatives in the United States are railing against what they call ‘Critical Race Theory,’ which tends to mean how school teachers deal with the teaching of slavery, Jim Crow, and other racist parts of U.S. history.
The events on Harris’ visit to Ghana are part of a weeklong trip that will include visits to Tanzania and Zambia.
