Two young men who stole Goats made to carry it around the community
Two alleged goat thieves were paraded around the town of Madina in the Oti Region’s capital of Nkwanta with their stolen goods.
The folks response was intended as a caution to other people.
As the two suspects, Yakubu Mohammed, 21, and Rashid Alhassan, 26, marched through the neighborhood’s streets, they were booed and scorned.
The two were allegedly detained by locals led by Zongo Youth Chief Alidu Suraj Musah.
The two accused were forced by the locals to carry the dead goats on their heads as they moved from one area of Nkwanta to another. Their pleas and sobbing failed to sway the crowd.
The punishment meted out to the defendants was deemed reasonable by witnesses who lived nearby and will go a long way toward deterring locals from committing larceny.
The Nkwanta police eventually received them for an inquiry and prosecution.
ASP Lawrence Wiafe, the Nkwanta Divisional Crime Officer, verified the incident to the media on Monday, July 18, 2022, and stated that the offenders had been brought before the Nkwanta District Court.
The outcome of the hearings has not yet been communicated to him.
Suraj Alidu, the leader of the Zongo Youth, said that the high rate of theft in the area has incensed locals to the point where they have chosen to parade the suspects through the town.
The community could then calm down and move on with their lives while the police could perform their responsibilities.
He asserted that the community’s leaders are dedicated to working with the police to uphold peace and order. In order to ensure that offenders are turned over to authorities without having their civil rights violated, local communities organized monitoring organizations.
