The Sewing Teacher is a young Ghanaian lady who was assigned to a remote hamlet to work as a teacher as part of her Ghana national service program.
Janet Asibi alias Ama Val noticed upon her arrival in the village that many of the students at the community school where she was assigned lacked a uniform or their uniforms were tattered, so she decided to purchase a sewing machine to fix the problem.
The lady, who was assigned to Nsoatre SDA elementary school in Bono Region, has now stitched uniforms for many schools in the neighborhood and hopes to expand the effort to a national level once she receives funding.
With the help of a single sewing machine that she had learned to operate, she was able to sew uniforms for the students at no cost.
“Seeing these young ones, whom we refer to as future leaders, walk to school in torn clothes compelled me to put my sewing skills to use,” she said in an interview.
She saw finding solutions to this problem as a common obligation, which is why she funded it with her own money and with the help of friends and family.
A school uniform for each child presently costs her 50 Ghana Cedis, with sometimes less. Ama Val completes the project effectively by collaborating with and paying another seamstress.
She enlists her help in order to avoid becoming overworked as a teacher. Her ambition is to expand this concept, which she has named “One Student; One School Uniform,” to other pupils in Ghana.
