“The people in the photo eating with him are not policemen”- Ghana Police reacts to viral photo of Albert Donkor (the 27-year-old man whose death caused riots in Nkoranza)
The Ghana Police Service has encouraged the public to ignore a photo circulating on social media that purports to show Albert Donkor, the 27-year-old man whose death caused riots in Nkoranza, eating with cops.
According to the police, none of the individuals are cops from the Nkoranza South Municipality or anywhere else in the country.
“Our investigations have found that this is a photograph of Albert Donkor and his five pals, none of whom are police officers, taken during a funeral at Boana in the Nkoranza North District, approximately 20 kilometers from Nkoranza,” the Police Service said in a press release on Thursday, May 26.
“We believe this is a planned attempt by those behind this mischief to bring the Ghana Police Service’s name into shame,” said DCOP Kwesi Ofori, Director-General of Public Affairs.
The viral photo fueled rumors that Albert Donkor was killed by police officers on purpose and that he did not die in a gunfight while leading police as a suspect to the hideouts of some armed robbers in the municipality.
On Tuesday, May 17, those rumors provoked protests in Nkoranza, which resulted in the death of another young man. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) led top police to patrol the town’s streets and call on bereaved families on Wednesday, restoring calm to the area.
