The government of Ghana allocates GH25 million to begin construction of the National Cathedral.
The National Cathedral Secretariat has been granted permission to spend GH25 million as additional seed money for the construction of the National Cathedral by the government.
The money was to be provided to Ribade Limited as part payment for claims that were still owing, according to a letter to the Controller and Accountant’s General signed by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
“You are authorized to release the sum of GH25,000,000.00 to the National Cathedral Secretariat as additional seed money for the building of the National Cathedral as part payment of outstanding claims from RIBADE Limited,” the letter said.
According to documents, the incumbent government suggested the National Cathedral project in March 2017 as a way to demonstrate how the country is united, at peace, and spiritual.
The $350 million multi-religious cathedral will have a 5,000-seat auditorium, chapels, and a baptistery.
It is hoped to be completed by March 2024. People have argued that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to build the National Cathedral when the country was facing so many issues was a terrible one.
The President has defended himself by claiming that the structure is part of a commitment he made to God before the 2016 election.
A businessman named Jonathan Holm moved to the Supreme Court to challenge the government’s decision to offer the cathedral’s builders land and other assistance.
The court, however, refused his request for an injunction to halt construction on the ground where the National Cathedral was to be built in February 2020.
