“The Ghana Embassy here has told us to find our own way out of Ukraine”- Ghanaian Lady in Ukraine reveals
As Russian troops move across Ukraine, international students studying at Dnipro medical schools are looking for ways out.
Explosions were heard in the central Ukrainian city early Thursday morning, following Vladimir Putin’s launch of a full-scale offensive against the country.
Dnipro Medical Institute has about 2,000 foreign students, many of whom responded to a Guardian call for voices on the ground.
Rita Ansah, a 20-year-old Ghanaian medical student, has been in Dnipro since 2019. According to her, the Ghanaian embassy arranged for buses to transport students to Romania, but they were canceled on Friday afternoon after drivers refused to make the trip.
She claimed she had since been told by the embassy to plan her own exit from the country.
“I’m feeling very alone,” she told the Guardian from a student residence near the city center.
“Because the majority of the people on my floor are Ukrainians and Moroccans, we don’t speak the same language.” Right now, I’m just concentrating on packing, despite the fact that I’ll have to leave most of my clothes behind. We’ve been told to only bring a small backpack.”
Her plan is to book a public bus to Poland on Monday for $50, which is thought to be the safest mode of transportation because rail lines could be bombing targets.
