“The fire at Kejetia Market was caused by a trader who was cooking rice in her shop with gas” – Bawumia

The Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organization have identified the main source of the tremendouse fire outbreak at the Kejetia market complex.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during his visit to the facility to inspect the extent of damage caused by last Wednesday’s fire, stated that an unsupervised cooking gas cylinder explosion is to blame for the fire that broke out in the Market.

“I asked the Ghana National Fire Service and NADMO what caused the fire and they told me that their investigations revealed that someone, a trader who was cooking rice in her shop using a gas stove and that was the fire started, close to a nearby chemical shop, where they sell gunpowder, carbide, turpentine that resulted in the explosion,” the vice president said.

Dr. Bawumia has successfully intervened, and the Market Complex will reopen to business on Tuesday, March 21. In light of the blaze, the facility’s administration made the difficult decision to close its doors.

Three days in, it was decided to shut down the unaffected portions for a week and the impacted area permanently.

However, during his visit on Monday, March 20th, Vice President Bawumia announced that the vendors would be allowed to return to their booths beginning on Tuesday, March 21st, per agreements made with facility management and experts.

“I was taken round, especially where the incident happened. The shops were 33 out of 8,000. I asked the Fire Service and NADMO officials as regards the cause,” the Vice President said in Twi. “The market will be open starting on Tuesday to protect the livelihood of the agitated traders.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to Dr. Bawumia, has committed to help all of the merchants who were affected by the fire.
