Sad New Hits The Military as Ghana’s First Female Brigadier-General Constance Afenu D!es
Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu, the first female Brigadier General of the Ghana Armed Forces, has died, according to reports.
She is said to have died on Monday, January 25, 2022, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, following a brief illness.
Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu, the late, was the first female to achieve the highest rank in the Ghana Armed Forces when she was promoted to Brigadier General on March 7, 2016. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Ghana Armed Forces on April 25, 1980, following an eighteen-month regular training at the Ghana Military Academy.
General Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu was later appointed General Staff Officer Grade 3 (Training and Personnel Staff Officer) at the Border Guards Headquarters from 1983 to 1984, and Adjutant at the Border Guards Training School in Kpetoe in 1984.
She was appointed Second in Command of the Ghana Armed Forces Pay Regiment in 1995 and Commanding Officer in 1999, making her the first female in the Armed Forces to hold these positions.
From 2013 to 2016, she was the first woman to be appointed Deputy Military Adviser (DMILAD) at Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
General Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu was promoted to Brigadier-General in March 2016 while serving as DMILAD, making her the first female general in Ghana’s Armed Forces.
The Brigadier General also represented the Ghana Armed Forces to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
She took part in UN peacekeeping operations as a member of the GhanaBatts (Ghana Battalion) in UNIFIL (1994 & 1998), MONUSCO (2007), and UNMIL (2010). (2009).
