Who is Sacheen Littlefeather

Sacheen Cruz Littlefeather was a Native American civil rights activist and actress. Littlefeather was born in the United States to a Native American father and a White mother. She became involved in the Native American activist community during the Alcatraz occupation in 1969.

Marie Louise Cruz was born on November 14, 1946, in Salinas, California. Geroldine Marie Barnitz (1923-2009), a leather stamper of French, German, and Dutch ancestry who was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, was her mother. Her father, Manuel Ybarra Cruz (1922-1966), was of White Mountain Apache and Yaqui descent and lived in Oxnard, California. Geroldine and Manuel were both saddlemakers. Geroldine learned the trade from Leo Leonard, owner of Leonard Saddle Co. in Santa Barbara, and Manuel began making saddles as a child in San Francisco. By 1949, they had relocated to Salinas and established their own business, “Cruz Saddlery.” After her father died in 1966, her mother continued to run the business.
