In a leaked video footage, Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), admits to collecting pay from the Ghana Police Service.
He revealed that he works as an informant for the law enforcement agency and is compensated for his efforts.
This statement occurred in reaction to an accusation made in the video by an unidentified individual that Naabu was on the payroll of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. Naabu clarified that the Ghana Police Service—not the IGP—is responsible for paying him.
Following two previous leaks, the first of which is currently under investigation by Parliament. According to previous leaks, prominent police officers were spotted seeking Bugri Naabu’s cooperation to depose the present IGP.
On September 8, 2023, the police administration acted by arresting the officers implicated in the leaked recording, which involved a conspiracy to depose the IGP.
The police reported the arrests of Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Mr. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, and Superintendent Mr. George Lysander Asare in a statement.
These actions were taken in conjunction with the audio cassette, which had been the subject of a Parliamentary investigation. The interdiction was intended to prepare the way for disciplinary actions in accordance with Police Service norms.
However, the police published another statement the next day, Friday, September 8, 2023, suspending the officers’ interdiction.
The stated reason was to prevent jeopardizing the current work of the legislative ad hoc committee probing the problem.
“Mr. Chairman… You informed us you weren’t getting anything from Dampare, so we looked into it, and Dampare is paying you… “He’s paying you GH10,000,” the person suggested to Naabu.
“You don’t tell me he pays me GH?”He doesn’t pay me; it’s the cops. I’m not sure; do I get GH?”I get $10,000 from the police, and they tell me about the security work I do as a paramount chief… When there’s a problem, I report it to them,” Naabu explained.
