Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of the late Black Stars player Christian Atsu, said that she was sad about his death.
In a tribute, the widow said that her life hasn’t been the same since she lost her loving husband at age 31 in the terrible earthquake in Turkey.
Christiana Atsupie Twasam, the late footballer’s sister, read the tribute as Mrs. Atsu, who was visibly upset as she climbed the podium and tried hard not to cry.
“Lying before me today is the mortal remains of a beloved father and husband. I knew little that morning that God is going to call you home. In life, I love you dearly. In death, I do the same. It breaks my heart to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of me went with you.”
“Your love is still my guide, and though I cannot see you. You are always on my side. You were always so full of life. You seemed to be immortal. Your smile, your love, I see you in our children’s smile. You are never really gone as part of you is within them. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. But as you always say, God win. In Love, your wife.”
On Friday, March 17, 2023, a funeral service for Christian Atsu was held in the State House’s forecourt.
Marie-Claire Rupio Atsu, the late player’s widow, spoke on the platform and gave a moving homage to him.
She appeared to have maintained her composure as she entered the funeral home. She finally snapped, though, when it came time to pay her respects.
She started reading the tribute and then started crying.
While Mrs. Atsu struggled to contain her tears, the late footballer’s sister, Christiana Atsupie Twasam, took over to continue the reading.
On February 6, 2023, a horrific 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck regions of Turkey and Syria claimed the life of the football player.
After an 11-story building collapsed on Atsu and others in Turkey, his lifeless body was pulled from the debris.
On February 19, 2023, a Sunday, his body was transported from Turkey to Ghana.
