My time was wasted: GH man now in UK regrets having worked as a policeman in Ghana. (Video)

A UK-based Ghanaian named Nana Yaw has expressed his regret for spending nine years of his life working as a police officer in Ghana. According to Nana Yaw, he believes he would have been better off if he had decided to travel abroad instead of joining the security service in Ghana. He admitted that he joined the police force solely for survival, as he was certain of receiving a monthly salary. However, Nana Yaw now believes that if he had traveled earlier, he could have achieved more for himself.

In an interview with DJ Nyaami, Nana Yaw explained that he wrote a letter to the appropriate office, notifying them of his intention to study abroad for two years. Fortunately, his request was granted, and he left Ghana in 2020. The poor wages and lack of incentives in the Ghana Police Service served as motivation for his decision to leave the country.

After completing his studies in the UK, Nana Yaw sent his resignation letter to the Police Service. Within just two and a half years of being in the UK, he was able to build a house back home, something he believes would have been near impossible had he remained a police officer in Ghana.

Nana Yaw expressed his disappointment with the lack of respect shown to the police and other security personnel in Ghana by the country’s leaders. He highlighted that when abroad, security personnel are greatly respected and provided with their basic needs. This disparity further fueled his decision to leave the Ghana Police Service.

Nana Yaw’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges faced by police officers in Ghana, including poor wages and lack of incentives. It also sheds light on the opportunities available to Ghanaians abroad, which can lead to greater personal and financial success.
