Davido, a Nigerian afrobeat artist, has questioned why his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji, was constantly arresting him at the start of his music career.
According to the singer, his father has always been opposed to his pursuing music and has always told him that his education was more important than music.
In an interview with Hot 97FM in New York, he said that since he was not paying attention to what his father was saying, he was continuously detained by officers dispatched by his father.
Davido said that his father used to have him arrested anytime he was scheduled to play at any event, and if that happened, everyone else, including the event organizers and promoters, is also detained.
“He sent police to get me… like he sees a billboard; for example, Davido performing, Wizkid performing’. He would send police to arrest everybody– the show promoter, if you’re there (you would be arrested),” he told the host.
When asked why his father was doing that, he said that his father was trying all he could to persuade him to attend to school and thought it was the only way to get him.
He said that he discovered he was popular while in police custody after one of his arrests when the officer in charge of the mobile phone phoned. The police ringing tone was his tune, much to his amazement.
He informed the cop it was his song, which prompted the cop to question whether he was Davido, and when he said yes, he took out the keys and let him out of the cells.
“He kept on doing it. Then there was one time. This is where I knew that ‘Oh I’m lit!’. They (the police) came and got me. Then I’m in the cell and the dude that got the keys his phone rings, and it’s my song! I said ‘that’s me’. He said ‘you’re Davido?’. I said ‘yes!’. And he let me go.”
When questioned why his father had ceased arresting him, he said that he had finished his studies but was only doing it part-time.
He was quick to emphasize that it wasn’t that his father didn’t appreciate music, but that he was simply doing his hardest to get him to take his education seriously, stating that his father is now his greatest and number one fan, constantly looking for what’s next for him.
