Most of the first child of married women belongs to another man – Sally Mann claims
Self-acclaimed celebrity in Ghana, Sally Mann, has stirred up a heated debate with her recent comments about married women.
In a recent interview on Joy TV, Mann claimed that a majority of first-born children of married women actually belong to other men, suggesting that infidelity is rampant among married women in Ghana.
Mann pointed to the case of former footballer Odartey Lamptey and his ex-wife Gloria Lamptey as an example. The couple got married in 1994, but Gloria filed for an annulment in 2013, alleging that Odartey had been physically and emotionally abusive towards her and their children. She also accused him of having extramarital affairs.
After a lengthy legal battle, the court ruled in June 2017 that the marriage had irreparably broken down and that the three children were not biologically related to Odartey. Gloria was awarded a financial settlement, a house, and two vehicles, while the marital home was given to Odartey.
Drawing from this case, Mann urged married women to refrain from cheating on their husbands, claiming that the prevalence of infidelity in marriages is alarming and needs to be addressed urgently.
Mann’s remarks have evoked strong reactions from the public, with some supporting her stance on fidelity and others criticizing her for generalizing and making sweeping statements. The controversy surrounding her comments has ignited a broader discussion about the challenges and complexities of marriage in Ghanaian society.
It remains to be seen whether Mann’s remarks will spark any tangible changes or actions in relationships and marriages across the country or if they will simply fade away as another controversial statement from a media personality.
