Michelle Marie Pfeiffer was born on April 29, 1958, in Santa Ana, California, the second of four children to air-conditioning contractor Richard Pfeiffer (1933-1998) and housewife Donna Jean (née Taverna; 1932-2018). She has an older brother, Rick (born 1955), and two younger sisters, Dedee Pfeiffer (born 1964), a television and film actress, and Lori Pfeiffer (born 1964), a model (born 1965). Her parents were both born in North Dakota. Her paternal grandfather was German, and her paternal grandmother was English, Welsh, French, Irish, and Dutch, while her maternal grandfather was Swiss-German-Italian, and her maternal grandmother was Swedish. Pfeiffer spent her childhood in Midway City, an Orange County community about seven miles (11 km) away from where she was born.

Pfeiffer graduated from Fountain Valley High School in 1976. She worked as a check-out girl at Vons and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Golden West College. She decided to pursue an acting career after a brief stint as a court stenographer trainee. She won the Miss Orange County beauty pageant in 1978 and placed sixth in the Miss California pageant the following year. Following her participation in these pageants, she signed with an agent and began auditioning for television and film roles.

Pfeiffer made her acting debut in 1978, appearing in a single episode of Fantasy Island. Other television series roles included Delta House, CHiPs, Enos, and B.A.D. Cats. Her CBS television debut was in “The Solitary Man” (1979). Pfeiffer made her film debut in the comedy The Hollywood Knights (1980), co-starring with Tony Danza as high school sweethearts. She later appeared in supporting roles in Falling in Love Again (1980) with Susannah York and Charlie Chan, as well as The Curse of the Dragon Queen (1981), none of which were critically or commercially successful. She appeared in a television commercial for Lux soap and studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse before appearing in three 1981 television movies: Callie and Son (with Lindsay Wagner), The Children Nobody Wanted, and Splendor in the Grass.
