Meet the woman who has been living underwater for 20 years.

A 65-year-old woman from India’s West Bengal has lived the past two decades engulfed in a local lake due to a mystery illness.

The 65-year-old woman is currently staying in an unidentified village in India.

She heads into a shallow stream to sit immersed in the river for a couple of hours, till the sun set every morning.

At first, she was hospitalized with an unexplained condition. She had swellings and discomfort in her body. The only thing that relieved the woman’s pain was water, so she bathed in a lake near her village, and she’s been doing it for more than two decades.

Though she and her family live in a very remote West Bengal area and are too poor to go to a treatment center, Pataruni Gosh allegedly spends 12 to 14 hours per day inside  the lake. At dusk, she rises from the water and heads inside, where she will do some work until she sleeps.

Despite her sickness and lack of physical exercise, the Indian mermaid apparently consumes a bit of rice and some vegetables throughout the day. She would carry her food to the lake with her family and enjoy it despite being open in the sun.

Pataruni can’t stand being lonely, so her family members and other villagers come to visit her daily. Her family are worried about her well-being but don’t know how to help her.
